Why does the Ebola crisis is West Africa, present a need for improved natural resource protection across Africa?

Evidence is beginning to emerge that one of the underlying causes of the current Ebola outbreak in West Africa is altered land use and the rapidly increasing rate of encroachment into already fragmented tropical forests. This is leading to the displacement of wildlife from their natural habitats, including animals that host Ebola and other viruses, bringing them into ever closer contact with human populations. Initial research indicates that as many as 22million people in West and Central Africa could be at risk from future outbreaks.

The Environmental Foundation for Africa (EFA) is a Sierra Leone-based NGO (www.efasl.org), that has been working for over two decades in West Africa. EFA is collaborating with the Environmental Resources Management Foundation, to undertake research into the current situation in West Africa and the extent to which donor agencies and NGOs effectively integrate management of natural resources into their development models. With practically all rural communities dependent on natural resources, (especially land and forests) for their livelihoods and basic well-being, improved stewardship of these resources and the protection of the local environment has become a dire necessity.

EFA and the ERM Foundation will present preliminary findings of the ongoing research.

There will be general discussions after the presentation. RSVP: tommy.garnett@gmail.com/ Tel-086 898 7623
