Seminar - "Preventing Radicalisation within the Muslim Community"

30 Mar 2016

A seminar entitled "Preventing Radicalisation within the Muslim Community" and official launch of anti-extremism declaration in the Irish School of Ecumenics, Trinity College Dublin, on Thursday31st March from 7pm-9pm.

Last week the world has seen the cities of Brussels, Baghdad and Lahore rocked by a series of suicide bomb attacks that targeted the Belgian airport and metro station, an Iraqi Football Stadium and a Pakistani Family Park. These attacks have so far taken the lives of more than 150 people with many more injured. These attacks in Belgium, Iraq and Pakistan come in a month that also saw two attacks in the Turkish cities of Ankara and Istanbul that saw more than 40 people killed. These attacks once again reiterate that the perpetrators are indiscriminate in their actions and seek only to spread fear and anxiety within communities.

With these attacks on innocent people important questions arise: Why and how do young European-born Muslims become radicalised? Does Islamic theology play a role in radicalising young Muslims? What is the role of the Muslim Community in preventing radicalisation and what extent is the Muslim Community playing this role ?

Irish Muslim Peace & Integration Council is pleased to invite you to a seminar entitled " Preventing Radicalisation within the Muslim Community " in which 2 Muslim Scholars will speak on these issues. The seminar will be Chaired by Dr. Andrew Pierce, Assistant Professor in the Irish School of Ecumenics. There will be a Q & A session after the talks by the speakers.

The Seminar will also mark theofficial launch of the anti-extremism declaration which will be signed for the first time in Ireland by our visiting speaker, Shaykh Fakhruddin Owaisi. The declaration has been drawn up to ensure that all visiting Muslim speakers to Ireland abide by the norms of peaceful and respectful discussion and teaching.
